Walter Wanderley's Brazilian Organ; Capitol ST-1856; 1964/1963; 1st press! N-/N- S $40 (or top seam split E/V+ S $15, specify) -- "Brilliant bossa nova artistry by the most spectacular musician in South America--with voices and orchestra"; US recording debut and release of his fantastic early Brasilian LP, O samba é mais samba (Odeon MOFB-3285; 1963)--super rare and too hard to find now!; later it was reissued widely on Tower as From Rio with Love but don't bother with that issue--inferior sound!; this features great guitar in bright sound and is as fantastic as anything you'll ever hear by him; among his US releases the only thing comparable is Organ-Ized (another straightforward license of Brasil-recorded classics); this one is ESSENTIAL but shamefully overlooked; Labareda, Você e eu, Volto já, Eu não tenho onde morar, Deixa andar, Eu e o Rio, A mesma rosa amarela, Corcovado, Só vou de mulher, Que sabe você de mim, A nêga se vingou, O poema da vida
Walter Wanderley's Brazilian Organ; Capitol T-1856 promo w/timing strip E+/N- $30 -- "Brilliant bossa nova artistry by the most spectacular musician in South America--with voices and orchestra"; US recording debut and release of his fantastic early Brasilian LP, O samba é mais samba (Odeon MOFB-3285; 1963)--super rare and too hard to find now!; later it was reissued widely on Tower as From Rio with Love but don't bother with that issue--inferior sound!; this features great guitar in bright sound and is as fantastic as anything you'll ever hear by him; among his US releases the only thing comparable is Organ-Ized (another straightforward license of Brasil-recorded classics); this one is ESSENTIAL but shamefully overlooked; Labareda, Você e eu, Volto já, Eu não tenho onde morar, Deixa andar, Eu e o Rio, A mesma rosa amarela, Corcovado, Só vou de mulher, Que sabe você de mim, A nêga se vingou, O poema da vida
Walter Wanderley: Organ-Ized (mono); Philips PHM-200-233; deep groove E/E $30 (or deep groove cutout E+/E+ $30, specify) (or E-/N- $25, specify) (or V+/E+ $20, specify) -- organ; a stone swinging killer; classic example of a "sleeper" LP taken for granted by those who fail to realize it's his best early Brasilian recordings in an early edition for US/European markets; It's THE REAL THING: serious, collectors-item stuff when the original Brasilian pressings; definitely not the slick, later US stereo remakes (good as those are) that finally made him a household name in the US and worldwide; these far punchier mono originals made his name in his home country years before; as with his other contemporaneous but much rarer collectors-item LPs from Brasil, it's truly AWESOME!!! (worth it just for the original of smash hit "Summer Samba"); So Nice/Samba de Verao (Summer Samba), Batucada Surgiu (Chant of the Batoque), Vivo Sonhando (I Live Dreaming), Mar Amar (Sea...to Love), Voce (You), Reza (Lai Ladaia), Garota Moderna (Modern Miss), Menina Flor (Beauteous Lass), Opiniao (Opinion), Deus Brasileiro (God of Brasil)
Walter Wanderley: Organ-Ized; Philips PHS-600-233; deep groove E+/N ES $30 -- organ; see the description above; excellent choice for someone who prefers a stereo original in top shape, even if the stereo had to be simulated; consider also the jacket motif (perfect gift for clerks and secretaries who like Hammond or Brasil)
Walter Wanderley Trio: Cheganca; Verve V6-8676; gatefold cutout N/N S $15 -- organ/Brasil/samba; classic/essential/wonderful--just Wanderley with percussionist Bobby Rosengarden (plus Sol Gubin percussion on one track), not rare but worth getting in top shape (this one's flawless other than the jacket's bullet-hole cutout at bottom right) and here you don't need to be like the nut who paid $83 for it sealed!; Cheganga (The Great Arrival), Amanha, Take Care My Heart, Agua de beber, Here's that Rainy Day, O ganso, Mar amar, Voce e eu, O menino desce o morro, Da-Me (Stay My Love), Amor de nada, A Man & a Woman
Walter Wanderley: Batucada; Verve V6-8706; gatefold; cutout N/N shrink S $20 (or cutout N/E S $15, specify) -- organ/Brasil/samba; one of his best US LPs and not as easy to find as many of his others, but we offer it because it's that GOOD (and not just a groovy jacket); O Barquinho, On the South Side of Chicago, Batucada, It Hurts to Say Goodbye, Os Grilos, Minha Saudade, E preciso cantar, So What's New?, Wave (vocal by Talya Ferro), Ainda mais lindo, Ela e carioca, Jequibau
The Original Walter Wanderley Trio: The Return of the Original; Canyon 7711; E+/E+ S $30 -- organ/Brasil/samba; trying something new in the '70s, this has a different sound than most of his more uptempo previous work, very "chill"; Nobody (E nada mais), The Sea is My Song (Cancao do mar lindo), Good Time (Tempinho bom), Angelique, Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head, Poor Butterfly, A Spring Morning (Manha de primavera), Forgetting You (Esquecendo voce), Camel Juice, You (Voce), Lollipops & Roses
Walter Wanderley: Perpetual Motion Love; GNPS-2142; 1981; V+/N- S $50 -- Brasil/samba/organ/Moog/ARP/funk; wow! what a way to end a long, stellar vinyl career; while BOTH LPs on GNP are super-rare (only one pressing, it seems) and wonderful, this is the second and better LP; the fourteen tunes reflect all you could hope for, from Joao Donato ("Amazonas") to Don Sebesky, Jobim, Bill Withers, etc. to a nice pair of fresh originals by Wanderley himself; we love the exoticism of "Recife" and the terrific use of synthesizers but wait til you hear the funky, funky version of "Caravan"; Perpetual Motion Love, Just the Two of Us, Surfboard, Sukiyaki, Amazonas, Monica, Caravan, Astronaut, Forget, On My Mind, The Moon Was Yellow, Recife, Julie is Her Name, Samba da aviao (Jet Samba)
Walter Wanderley's Brazilian Organ/The Lee Evans Trio EP; Capitol Pro-2315; 1963; promo E-/E+ $15 -- Brasilian organ/jazz piano; Wanderley's tunes are "Volta Ja" and "Corcovado"; this super-rare promo for DJs belongs on YOUR Jukebox of the Gods
