Sabu with Dizzy Gillespie
These tracks were recorded Dec. 29, 1948, shortly after Sabu replaced the recently gunned-down Chano Pozo [Gonzales] in Dizzy Gillespie's last big band. Sabu provides the vocal on Pozo's signature hit, "Guarachi Guaro." Years later the tune was revived once again as "Soul Sauce" by Cal Tjader.

- Dizzy Gillespie: 16 Rare Performances; RCA Vintage Series LPV; 1966

An early LP with most of these tracks (Sabu on at least one, earlier versions with Chano Pozo):
Dizzy Gillespie: Dizzier & Dizzier; RCA Victor LJM-1009; c.1955
"Guarachi Guaro" also appears on:
- When Be-Bop Met the Big Band; RCA 741095; 1974
- "Diz"; RCA Vintage Series; Pickwick Camden Quintessence Jazz Series QJ-25071; 1978
Sabu plays bongos. Leonard Feather notes that "Guarachi Guaro" is "a Gillespie composition arranged by Gerald Wilson. This reminder of Dizzy's pioneer role in the Afro-Cuban fusion has a call-and-response passage involving Sabu Martinez and the band." (It's also a very much a reminder of "Manteca.")
